Many residents of South Florida spent the day
outdoors celebrating Independence Day whether it was on the beach, at a park or
on a boat. On Friday, July 4th, after the firework show was over, a
three- boat collision occurred in the Biscayne Bay Marina. Of the 22 occupants
on board the vessels a dozen were injured, four of which were fatally injured. It’s
still unclear what the cause of the accident was, but it was reported that one
of the boats was traveling at a high speed before the collision –further highlighting
how important it is to abide by the laws set in place when it comes to boating.
A representative of the Florida Fish and
Wildlife Conservation Commission, Jorge Pino, admitted that this accident is
the worst he’s seen in his 11 years in the field. Many seasoned sport fishing veterans
believe that the simplest and quickest way to deal with this issue is a
night-time speed limit or an idle-only zone. Another idea is to put up signs
along every marina, warning boaters of accident statistics in an effort to
educate them on the importance of boating safety. The state of Florida is a
popular place for boaters and because of this, officials are continuing to work
hard to find the best way to ensure safety in the water.
